These are portraits I took of a young girl called Nehir, the daughter of an acquaintance. I don’t remember exactly how we met but I was happy when the mother invited me over to her house to photograph Nehir. Nehir was so excited. She couldn’t speak English and my Turkish was equally non-existent but somehow we managed to understand each other. Almost as soon as I walked into the flat she was eager to show me her room and all the things she had in it – her books, her dolls, her pink dresses and even a picture of her dad. She had so much to say and even though I didn’t understand I listened to her, watching for those in between moments when I clicked the shutter.
